5. Catacombs of Paris

When King Louis XVI announced all cemeteries should be moved outside of Paris, the work began in 1780 to empty out all of the burial grounds and transport the bodies to the underground ossuaries. More than six million bodies were moved in total, and their bones now line the walls in this ancient tunnel.
