KILLER ROBOTS ARE COMING: Google & Tesla Beg Awareness

Elon Musk and Mustafa Suleyman have written an open letter urging the UN to block the use of lethal autonomous weapons to prevent the third age of war!

The UN recently began formal discussions on weapons which include drones, tanks and automated machine guns.

Luckily the founders of AI and robotics companies are stepping up to voice their concerns that this arms race threatens to provoke the “third revolution in warfare”.

First there was gunpowder, then nuclear arms. Next up will be Killer Robots. And it’s already happening. Samsung’s SGR-A1 sentry gun, capable of firing autonomously is in use along the South Korean border. Developed on behalf of the South Korean government, it was the first of its kind capable of performing surveillance, voice-recognition, tracking and firing with a mounted machine gun or grenade launcher.

The UK has been developing the Taranis drone, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle, (about the size of a BAE Hawk) had its first test flight in 2013 and is expected to be part of the Royal Air Force’s Future Offensive Air System.

Russia, and other countries are currently developing robotic tanks that can either be remote controlled or operated autonomously. (autonomous versions of the Russian Uran-9)

And the U.S. is not to be left out, with its autonomous warship, the Sea Hunter, intended to weild anti-submarine weapons.

Could this be the rising of the machines?

AI has always been designed to make our lives easier, think for us so we don’t have to. But when those thoughts are how to most efficiently kill humans… It gets kinda scary.

Although on the flip-side an autonomous robot could actually save hundreds of soldier’s lives. In war between robots there would be 0 human casualties…

Where do you stand on the latest AI advances?
Is it safe to arm robots?
Will this lead to the rising of the machines?
