13. Avoid holding them

In the early half of the 1900s people were really strict with babies, to the point that it was suggested not to hold them for fun or cuddling or you’d produce a “little tyrant.” Holding the baby was strictly business for feeding and transportation, not affection. A 1929 infant care pamphlet suggested that “a baby should learn that such habitual crying will only cause his parents to ignore him.”
