10. Betsy Ross’ Lady Contribution
And while the men were off winning the Revolution, the most popular American myth starring a woman involves lady stuff (because let’s all disregard the fact that the Revolutionary War has tons of kickass women bringing their A game). But, I digress. The old story is that Washington himself came into Ross’ shop and was impressed with her sartorial acumen, so he commissioned her to get the thing done. Of course, he had no authority to actually do that, and history suggests the overall design of the flag was done more by committee than anything else. Ross can likely claim credit for the use of the five-pointed star, though, which is still pretty cool. Not as cool as Abigail Adams’ general daily behavior, but still cool.
