11. On the Job Situation
Here’s another fun one from Trump’s announcement speech. In an effort to scare up some economy fright, Trump claimed, “A lot of people up there can’t get jobs. They can’t get jobs, because there are no jobs.” Here, we’re going to have to refute Mr. Trump with boring old numbers. So, he made the claim “there are no jobs” in the middle of June. Meanwhile, in May of the same year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in April of 2015, “job openings rose to 5.4 million on the last business day of April, the highest since the series began in December 2000.” So … yeah. He’s just making stuff up and doesn’t seem to care who knows it.
