If you are a woman and read Jane Austen as a teen, you likely grew up with some warped misconceptions about love and life that you had to overcome. Although we Janeites still can’t help adoring our favorite author, we must face up to the facts sooner or later – Jane Austen lies to women. The following are, unfortunately, a few ways our beloved Jane has led us astray.
1. Running into Mr. Darcy
In Pride and Prejudice, it seems that Lizzie is always running into Mr. Darcy, that perfect specimen of a man, around every bend. The girl can’t even take a random ramble down a forested lane without stumbling upon this handsome gent. In real life, unless we’re talking about the enclosed world of a high school, that just doesn’t happen to women. If you don’t connect with that cute guy at Starbucks, chances are you’ll never see him again.
