8. Heath Hen
The Heath Hen had a bad reputation as “poor man’s food” throughout Northeast colonial America. They reputedly were once so common that they roosted on the Boston Common in the early days of America. Some historians even believe it was heath hen, not turkey eaten at the first Thanksgiving. Their popularity as food and their reputation for being so common spelled an early end for the Heath Hen, which was all eaten up by 1932.
