5. Bubal Hartebeest
Blame this one on the French. The Bubal Hartebeest was one in a family of long-faced antelope native to the area north of the Sahara Desert. In the 19th century, however, as the French army swept across Algeria, massive herds of Bubal Hartebeest were annihilated in one fell swoop. The species decreased over the course of the next hundreds years until it was declared extinct at the end of the 1930’s.
