5. A Tale of Two Sisters

This is a Korean horror film that follows many of the standard tropes you find in Korean and Japanese cinema. It does it better than most I’ve seen (apparently this is a matter of opinion). The story is centered around two sisters whose father has remarried and is told from their point of view. Some of the scares are expected, but others are downright disturbing. And the ending; creepily ambiguous.

The worst of the worst

Horror films rely on nighttime scenes because everything is scarier in the dark. This film got me however, got me bad, with the bedroom scene. What would have been a formulaic scene is infinitely more jarring as it occurs in that sleepy dawn’s early light, when the sun’s up but you’re considering going back to sleep and then oh-myyy-GOD-WHAT THE HELL!!???
