What’s your favorite film? Have you ever asked a stranger that? People might choose one based on the actors, the script, the special effects or the soundtrack. They’ll pretentiously tell you, “It makes you reflect upon your own life” or, “This film made me re-think everything” or wax poetic about the subtext in Birdman. These same people will then completely fail to see the layers of messages in a movie like Pacific Rim (IT WAS AN AWESOME FILM, OKAY?! I DIDN’T KNOW HOW MUCH I WAS GOING TO LIKE IT!).
But what about films that have actually traumatized you? What films have stuck in your head for days? Which scenes have made you cover your eyes, or have nightmares? What about those films you can never watch again? The ones that damage you for life. Here are some of the most scarring movies ever, with a special shout-out to their most disturbing scenes.
SPOILERS AHOY!!
1. Event Horizon
Sam Neill deals with his grief in a terrible way. This film starts off as a space thriller. In typical horror logic, a large crew is sent off to discover the fate of the Event Horizon which disappeared 7 years previously (instead of say, sending a drone to assess the situation first. This is supposed to be in the year 2047, apparently we’re still stupid in the future). If you’re expecting the slow mounting dread of Alien, boy, are you wrong! Torture, self-inflicted mutilations, murder and sundry horrors all in one film. Huzzah!
The worst of the worst?
The eyeball scene. Closely followed by the decrypted video-message. In fact the video might be the worst part, but I think I blanked a lot of it from my memory. The eyeball scene remains.
