5. Jack Sparrow Is the Only Decent Human Being in the Whole Franchise
This one is less of a theory and more of a ‘why-the-hell-did-they-cut-that-from-the-film?’ situation. They took out an awesome little scene that gave a lot more depth to Jack Sparrow’s character and made Beckett’s grudge against him understandable (whilst also showing just how much of a git Beckett really was). It made its way back into the film on DVD releases though (which makes you wonder why they cut it in the first place), so it’s there if you want to see it.
Basically, it’s an extension of the scene between Beckett (the big bad guy of the film) and Johnny Depp. Beckett put Jack Sparrow in charge of a shipful of slaves and Sparrow, not being a psychotic, morally bankrupt arsehole, set them free. He was branded as a pirate, his crew scattered or killed and his ship burned and sunk. Which led to him making that pact with Davey Jones to bring it back. Damn, Jack’s actually an awesome character.
I guess Disney thought it was too difficult to relate to a main character who had very solid morals but had been forced to bend them in order to remain alive, because life is crappy that way. Actually, that’s depressingly realistic.
And that kids, is how Johnny Depp became a pirate.
