Gene Kusche, pictured, is the man who initially got Avery put behind bars in 1985 for a crime he really, truly didn’t commit. He was a Manitowoc Sheriff’s deputy at the time who drew a picture of Avery’s mug shot and then tried to claim that it was the victim’s composite. Of course, to this day Kusche denies any wrongdoing.
