Nintendo will be launching on September 29th the follow up to the mini NES, the mini SNES. Great.
But last year they launched the mini NES and all of us Nintendo fans who patiently awaited its release date, visited Amazon to find they had been completely sold out.
However many entrepreneuring scalpers had pre-ordered all Nintendo’s stock before the release and – to this day – are still selling them off at 2 and even 3 times Nintendo’s original price.
All Nintendo could do was apologize: “We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologise,” Simply admitting that demand for the machine had been “greater than we anticipated”.
To fill the mini NES void, smaller Chinese companies noticed the still huge demand and began making their own knock-off version of the mini NES which varies only slightly.
Even DIY enthusiasts have whipped together their own versions made with Raspberry Pi’s and 3D printed cases.
Any kind of preemptive market research would have told them they were making waaaay to few units, but It’s as if Nintendo doesn’t want your money!
This year, however is going to be different.
This year with the launch of the mini SNES they’re going to be doing it right! You can guarantee that they’ve learnt their lesson. They’ve studied the market, learned from last years mistakes?
Wrong. This year I wised up and managed to pre-order a European mini SNES in the 10 minutes it was available on Amazon. Unfortunately for Americans however the Walmart pre-order launch, happened over night and many Nintendo fans woke to find all the units already sold out.
But what’s worse, Walmart is now contacting people who did manage to reserve, cancelling their orders as they obviously won’t be able to procure the units themselves, saying that the pre-order launch was a ´glitch´.
Nintendo are constantly having this issue, they had it with the Switch and now both retro consoles.
When the Business Insider asked for comment, a Nintendo rep told them via email, “We have nothing to announce on this topic.”
Thanks a lot Nintendo.
